Farah Pahlavi Public Health Initiative

A Partnership with IHMT | NOVA University Lisbon

The Opportunity

The Shahbanou Farah Pahlavi Foundation (SFPF), in partnership with the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of NOVA University Lisbon (IHMT | NOVA), is launching a dedicated public health programme to support the next generation of researchers and practitioners in global health.

Rooted in the legacy of Her Majesty Farah Pahlavi and her decades of leadership across education, public health, and social inclusion, this initiative reflects the Foundation's mission: to inspire the global advancement of social and cultural causes through empathy, positive thinking, and cross-cultural dialogue.

Built on the Cooperation Protocol signed on 28 February 2024 between SFPF and NOVA University Lisbon, and further developed through the Additional Agreement between SFPF and IHMT | NOVA, the programme brings together two complementary institutions — one dedicated to global health research and training, the other to preserving heritage and empowering communities — to deliver measurable impact in public health education.

The Programmes
The initiative comprises two flagship components:

1. Farah Pahlavi Outreach Grant
The Farah Pahlavi Outreach Grant provides direct financial support to Master's students at IHMT | NOVA, enabling them to pursue advanced studies in global health, tropical medicine, and biomedical sciences.

Over five years, the programme will support a cohort of 25 grant recipients, equipping emerging public health professionals with financial resources to focus on their studies and research.

2. Farah Pahlavi Mentorship in Public Health
The Farah Pahlavi Mentorship in Public Health pairs students with experienced faculty, researchers, and international practitioners, providing structured guidance throughout their academic journey. The programme draws on the mentoring framework established under the Farah Pahlavi Emerging Voices initiative.

Each year, the programme provides:

  • Three mentorships coordinated by NOVA (IHMT faculty and researchers)

  • Two mentorships coordinated by SFPF (in partnership with US and European institutions)

The mentorship programme may include participation in national or international conferences.

Over five years, the programme will cultivate a cohort of 25 mentees with deep expertise and international professional networks in public health.
