CENTRE FOR INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS

Created in 1965 to ensure the intellectual development of children and young adults, it contributed on a national level to their education by establishing libraries (including a “bibliobus” or mobile library); publications, reading materials and audiovisual facilities; a cinematography unit for film, film production and an annual film festival, and scholarships for needy children and adolescents. Iranian cinema today is largely a product of this organisation.

NATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN | NSPC

Created in 1952 aimed at physical, cultural and intellectual education and wellbeing of children, including nutrition programmes, NSPC maintained harmonious relations with public, private, and municipal institutions, coordinating with and contributing to partner organisations and programmes. It created clinics for children with developmental disabilities; the Centre for the Education of Children; the Children's Home; the Farahnaz Nurses' Training Centre; the Centre for Social Work; Education for Children; and nurseries.

FEDERATION FOR PEOPLE WITH HEARING AND SPEECH IMPAIRMENTS

Founded in 1957 to provide physical education and prepare a team from among them for the Olympic Games. The Federation set up stadiums and sports fields for these athletes; provided guidance and facilities for Greco-Roman wrestling; gymnastics; volleyball; basketball; football; table tennis; cycling; swimming; and chess. Boys and girls take part in these sports and all necessary means provided to them.

 

ORGANISATION OF GIRL AND BOY SCOUTS

Starting in 1957 it soon became a member of the World Scout Federation. Scouting in Iran goes back to 1925 (temporarily interrupted by World War II). The Organisation provided boys and girls aged 8 to 18 with an environment conducive to their intellectual development; helping them acquire appropriate experience in different social fields; developing their character and personal abilities; teaching them to work in teams; preparing them for a better future and to be useful to society. It established scouting across Iran applying educational programmes based on the principles and regulations of the world scouting movement and in accordance with Iranian traditions. It maintained relations throughout with the World Scout Federation and its members.

 

ESTABLISHMENT FOR THE PROTECTION OF MOTHERS AND NEWBORNS

Created to build maternity hospitals and clinics across the country providing free care. Services included mobile pre-natal and post-natal maternity and health services; a nursing school; a school for midwives and a family-planning unit.

IRANIAN SOCIETY FOR LEPROSY

In 1960, the Society established its "Behkadeh" Centre in Khorasan, in eastern Iran, to care for leprosy patients. Most of the patients are able to work when they arrive at the Centre, as their illness has not reached an advanced stage. His Imperial Majesty donated 25,000 hectares of his own land for this Centre. The patients engage in farming and construction work building houses and planted vegetation and fruit trees. Her Majesty’s close personal in the flesh encounters with persons afflicted with the disease was pivotal to social destigmatisation and public support.

NATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

Established in 1967 to detect cases of cancer and to develop centres specialised in diagnosis and treatment. It collaborated with the University of Tehran for the training of cancer specialists; published bulletins, brochures, posters, and films to raise awareness about different kinds of cancer; establishing a national centre for statistics on this disease; setting up early-detection centres across the country; organising an annual Cancer Week; organising scientific courses; and creating a pavilion at the Ramsar Medical Congress to familiarise physicians with its activities.

 

SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF FIRE VICTIMS

Founded in 1965 to help and treat persons who suffered burns. It maintained close relations with the Faculty of Medicine and health organisations. Courses and lectures were organised to teach people how to avoid the effects of fires and burns.

IRANIAN FOUNDATION FOR WORLD HEALTH

The idea of creating such a foundation was conceived in 1968, with the approval of the World Health Organisation. Until then, only five countries had established such foundations: the United States, England, Switzerland, Canada, Ceylon and Iran. The Foundation developed activities of WHO on a global level and established links between investment in the field of health and industry in relation to human resources.

MEDICAL CONGRESS OF RAMSAR

In 1952, a group of physicians held a conference in Ramsar to discuss endemic diseases and appropriate methods for combating them. It was named the "Medical Congress of Iran" and renewed annually. The sessions addressed a medical issue with participation of foreign specialists, governmental and global health organisations. 

IRANIAN CULTURAL FOUNDATION

Created in 1964 under the auspices of the Council of Deans to promote and preserve Persian cultural heritage. Its initiatives include dictionary and history of the Persian language; dictionary of the Pahlavi language; vocabulary of scientific and technical terms; publication of works in science, literature, philosophy and mysticism; research on Persian dialects and art; and bibliography of works in Persian. The Foundation had dozens of specialists: linguists, technicians, scholars and men of letters.

ASIAN INSTITUTE OF PAHLAVI UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1929 by Professor Arthur Upham Pope in the USA, it was transferred in 1966 as a department of Pahlavi University to promote artistic and archaeological knowledge of Iran through conferences, publications and exhibitions. It established higher-education courses on history, art history, archaeology and Iranology; a course on Iranology for foreign students; a congress on archaeology; and a congress on art history.

NATIONAL SOCIETY FOR CULTURAL RELATIONS

Founded in 1965 to make Iranian culture known in foreign countries, exchanging academicians, organising exhibitions, and holding literary and scientific conferences. It strengthened cultural relations between Iran and many countries, inviting foreign art scholars to deepen their knowledge of Iranian art; granting scholarships to Iranian and foreign artists; sending artists and writers abroad to enrich their knowledge.

PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY OF TEHRAN

The Society was founded in 1953 under the Ministry of Culture and Arts with an objective to foster appreciation of Persian and Western classical music among Iranians. The Society created a library of musical works available to the public.

NATIONAL FOLKLORE ORGANISATION OF IRAN

Founded in 1967 to collect national and local dances and present them to the world. It opened a dance school and presented programmes on stage in provinces and the most remote corners of the country. Choreographers and cameramen were sent to different regions to collect local dances for use at the school and in performances.

ORGANISATION OF THE ART FESTIVAL

Established in 1967, the Art Festival was renewed in September of the following years, in Persepolis and Shiraz with an aim is to present authentic Iranian art to foreigners and Western art to Iranians. It organised theatrical and musical events.

EXHIBITION OF INTERNATIONAL PAVILIONS OF TEHRAN

Founded in 1970 to organise exhibitions and fairs in Iran and abroad, and to familiarise visitors with the development of different cultural and technical aspects of other countries and of Iran.

HIGH COUNCIL OF URBAN PLANNING

Instituted in 1965 to formulate general urban-planning principles in accordance with the development of the country; to provide the means necessary to carry out these projects; to review and approve urban and municipal projects to prevent undesirable urban development; and to prepare major projects for cities and present guidelines for harmonious urban development. The Council established a centre for relations with the population from a socio-economic point of view, among other matters.

INSTITUTE FOR TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION OF BOOKS

Founded in 1954 with the objective to develop general knowledge and to make foreign cultures known in Iran and Persian works abroad through translation and publication of books of literature, history and sciences.

FARAH PAHLAVI WELFARE ORGANISATION

Established in 1955 for the well-being of children and in collaboration with the Pahlavi Foundation, it devoted its efforts to the education of orphans. Her Majesty accepted the presidency of the Organisation in 1960. The Organisation's income was from donations from Her Majesty, the Pahlavi Foundation, Government and public support. New units were established with the aim to educate and support orphans and children without resources until they are capable of providing for their own needs. It  undertook disaster relief projects intended to help children affected by earthquake and natural disasters, creating boarding homes and accommodation centres; served deprived and needy children by giving them physical and mental education and instruction; organised permanent summer camps in the capital and on the shore of the Caspian Sea; and created shelters for children and young adolescents.
